Education

Dr. Paterson studied Zoology at Rhodes University where he also completed his Honours degree in Ichthyology. He completed his PhD is Estuarine Ecology at Rhodes and the JLB Smith Institute of Ichthyology (now NRF-SAIAB). He also has a Business Management qualification from Rhodes University.

Dr Paterson has served on the boards of several research institutions, including:

  • University of Cape Town MARE Institute
  • Rhodes University Institute for Water Research
  • Nelson Mandela University Institute for Coastal and Marine Research
  • National Science Festival
  • Team Leader for the South African Marine and Antarctic Research Plan and Director of the African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme (ACEP), where supported 30 researchers and 120 students over the current three-year cycle.
  • South African Government (advisory capacity)
  • Member of the Global Ocean Observing System in the Indian Ocean (IOGOOS) and the Agulhas Somali Large Marine Ecosystem Programme.
